Graphite drawing by Alexandra Blum Leigh on Sea Tames Estuary geese boots tern Essex

Alexandra Blum, Arrival, graphite on paper, 21 x 29.7 cm, 2021, Private Collection.

Last week I had the great good fortune to spend a few days in Old Leigh on the Essex coast. It was incredibly exhilarating seeing the Thames Estuary up close.

This drawing was made as soon as I arrived, noon on a blustery day. A low, throbbing sound travelled across the water, which I eventually realised came from a mass of geese (apparently visiting to eat the estuary’s eelgrass).

The tern in the bottom left of the image stood watching me for almost the entire time I drew, finally descending to the water, which I had thought was deep and choppy but turned out to be only tern ankle deep!
